In a sweet little room with windows looking out on the fall foilage of Asheville, North Carolina, we took turns with the mic for Bonnie’s Professional Creative Podcast and took a moment to reflect on the year. Bonnie asked each of us in the Mark Makers Mastermind, “What was one of the best habits in 2022 that has attributed to your success?” Each of these women (listed below!) are some of the best and brightest women I’ve ever met, and have give such golden advice for artists and designers who own a creative business. Each of them is striving to live a life that is balanced for their families and those around them. Take the time to listen to each of them – grab a pen and paper! I shared about Rest and Connection.
2022 marked incredible growth in my business. This year stretched and grew me in ways I never expected and it’s easy to not stop in seasons of growth. But my ever-present mind about why I started a creative business in the beginning allowed me to consider how and why I was headed toward burnout. It was easy to think I didn’t have time to stop for lunch with friends or to cook dinner on a deadline day. But there was no way that was sustainable, and against everything I believe about being a mom, friend, and business owner.
Prioritizing and cultivating relationships with my family, friends, colleagues, and students actually gives me more time back, in every way. I’m able to contribute, I’m poured into, I love, I’m loved… and coming back to work from a place of rest and fulfillment only makes my work and mission easier and more impactful. There will always be work to do in each area of our lives. Rest and connection might be the most important part of that.
Connection and collaboration is a huge part of my mission for my studio. I would love to welcome you to join one of my monthly virtual Open Studio sessions, where we can hang out and create art together.
